About

Maria Markham is a visual artist working in installation, sculpture, photography and video. Her artistic practice centers on the interconnectedness of all things. Her work explores the environment, the failures of capitalism and the socio-cultural anxieties that mark contemporary life. Using multiple media, often elements from the natural world, she expresses these explorations through imaginary gardens, sculpture, artist books and video. Markham creates spaces and artefacts that invite the viewer to contemplate different possibilities and speculate about resilient futures for all beings, human and beyond-human.

Markham’s work has been featured nationally and internationally in exhibits at The Invisible Dog, NY, Ely Center of Contemporary Art, New Haven, CT, level of service not required, La Jolla, CA, Accent Sisters, Jersey City, NJ and Platform Space, Belfast, Northern Ireland, along with venues in Latvia, Estonia, Ireland and England. She is a member of the Nua Collaborative. Her practice is amplified by over 30 years work in the nonprofit sector with diverse groups and communities. She holds a B.S. from Trinity College Dublin and a Masters in Nonprofit Management from Brandeis University. Markham (b. Dublin, Ireland) lives and works in New Haven, CT. She recently completed an MFA at the School for Visual Arts in New York.
